Curiosity Teased the Cat (Part II)

“Seriously, you’re wearing this?”, the look on my bestie’s face said it all.

“Why not? It’s easy, plus it was a last minute invite anyway…”

“Yeah, exactly – it’s too easy and boring! Come on, it’s the first big Halloween party in forever and you’re practically going as yourself. It’s just another one of your usual black outfits with cat ears! ”

I gave Lynn’s costume another look over in the mirror. Sigh, she did have a point. She was decked out as slutty Marie Antoinette in a velvet corset with a plunging neckline, short flounced skirt with the glittery make-up, fake jewels and manicure to boot. She looked amazing and would fit right into tonight’s theme of “Opulent Hedonism”. Life is finally back to normal and everyone’s in the mood to celebrate.

Meanwhile, I’m staring right back at the mirror in exactly what she guessed right. I had pulled every single piece for tonight from my usual wardrobe.

Black latex leggings – check.

Black body-skimming long sleeve top – check.

Black knee high latex boots – check.

Black cat eye mask – check.

Red lips – check.

After all, who wouldn’t want to be Catwoman any other day?

“I really doubt anyone else is going to have latex leggings and boots hanging around their closet, babe.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. We get it… you’re the hot Sex Ed teacher. Doesn’t it get so boring to be sexy all the time? Live a little! I’ll love to see you play damsel-in-distress for once!” She rolled her eyes at me as she picked up my spank paddle, gave me a light tap on my ass and laugh.

“You know I don’t do cute and I’m only going because you’re dragging me out. Anyway your Majesty, the Grab’s here…”

Holy crap, she’s right. I should have changed.

The party was hosted in a former warehouse in one of the industrial parks next to the harbor. As our car pulled up towards the front of the dark still building, part of me wondered if we got the address wrong. We were so far away from town and it would have taken forever to get another Grab if this was the wrong place.

“Lynn, are you sure this is it?” as I hesitantly closed the car door and looked up at the gritty warehouse.

“Chill babe, it’s the right address. Jason was telling me that it’s much cheaper than renting out a club and his crew still gets to go all crazy with the set-up and blast the music with no one complaining. It’ll be fun!” She grabbed my arm and pulled me into one of the creaky cargo lifts. She pushed the 4th button floor and the lift started its slow and heavy ascend.

I smirked at her as the cargo lift reached our floor and the heavy steel doors echoed as they opened, “I feel like I’m in a horror movie and this is the part where the audience is yelling at the screen ‘Get out!’”

We both gasp in unison at what lay before us. Lynn was the first to break the silence and run out.

“OMG THIS IS NUTS!” 

The lift had opened up to a literal sea of light. Massive multiple crystal chandeliers were reflecting off each other while galaxy lights pulsated making us feel like we were in a surreal dimension. We could have been in space or under the sea for all I knew. Voluminous velvet curtains draped across the walls while gold stars and holographic teardrops hung from the ceilings. There was a banquet table filled with delicious looking platters at the side of the room while smaller standing tables strewn around the space filled with nothing but bottles of champagne and decadent cocktails. The DJ at the stage was playing a mix of gritty, electro beats and sensual, heavy R&B.

But despite the incredible atmosphere, what took my breath away because it’s been way too long: the people. The hordes and hordes of beautiful and fascinating people dancing, flirting, mingling and just having fun on a crazy night like this.

I could feel my cheeks turning red as I immediately noticed some of the guys eyeing us as I trailed behind Lynn as she made her way through the crowd looking for her boyfriend Jason.

Everyone was dressed to the nines in costumes to rival Lynn’s, each one fancier and outrageous than the other. Even the guys were decked out with some of them definitely seizing the opportunity to show off their days spent in the gym with their naked oiled torsos. With all the sparkles, feathers, legs, cleavage on display – I felt like I wanted to melt into the floor with my sad DIY Catwoman costume.

“Hey babe, why don’t you go ahead first and find Jason? I need to go to the ladies first..” I half-shouted into Lynn’s ears as I pulled her hand back to get her attention. I forgot how loud it can be at a party. 

“Huh? Oh ok sure, I think it’s somewhere over there.. do you need me to come with you?”

“No, no it’s fine. I just need to pee.” Truth was I was getting overwhelmed by the scene and needed some fresh air. Even though I was just as thrilled as everyone else that the pandemic was over, I was suddenly feeling anxious at the crowds and forgetting how to be human all of a sudden.

“Just text me when you’re done!” She yelled over the wave of dancing and laughing heads as I pushed past the throng mumbling excuse me with each step.

 Urgh, I forgot how much I hate this part in a party. When everyone’s already drunk and stumbling into each other’s path and I’m narrowly missing being stepped on or pushed against. I thought I was just about to successfully escape the dance floor when I heard a loud “WHOAH” and felt the heavy sweaty mass crash into my left shoulder …

But just as instantaneously, felt a stranger’s hands wrap around my waist and was pulled towards my right. Right smack into his chest.

I stood there stunned as I looked onto the floor at an absolutely smashed party reveler drenched in his own drink that he spilled all over himself with broken glass next to him. He was bleeding from the shattered glass and out of nowhere, his groups of friends ran over to help.

Meanwhile, I heard a deep voice in my right ear with the hint of a French accent, “Wow, are you okay?”

 My brain didn’t process what had just happened but my heart did a little skip. I looked up and saw his green eyes first. I was confused for a bit as he was wearing a hat indoors and seemed to be decked in a uniform. Yet the dirty blonde scruff on his face means that he wasn’t a cop. I must have been staring bewilderedly at him for too long as he repeated himself, “Catwoman, are you okay? Did you get hurt?”

I was still pressed into his broad chest as he held onto my waist. Mmmm, he smells really good… as the scent of his earthy woody cologne lingered in the air. I could feel his strong arms wrapped around me and thought this might be my new favourite spot to just stay in forever. I was still eyeing his uniform as he held me close and trying to figure out who he was. White shirt, navy tie and hat, dark blazer, gold stripes around the cuffs… Not that I was complaining about scanning this tall broad-shoulder French specimen with the emerald eyes and deep voice, of course.

Then it hit me. Oh, it’s a pilot’s uniform! Well an Air France pilot to be exact as I eyed his badge. My inner voice just groaned “Oh no, how cliche…” 

“Oh yes, sorry.. I’m okay. Thank you for saving me… sorry about that,” as I quickly spun my heels around to run out the door. My cheeks felt flushed and hot as staying put was absolutely the last thing I wanted to do as the the room was starting to notice the commotion and head towards the fallen drunk.

Thankfully, the lift was already on the floor as I jumped right in and pressed the button quickly “Come on, come on…” I really needed the fresh air now. The steel doors shook and inched towards each other.  

Then Mr Air France casually strode into the lift and stood next to me. “You forgot your… stick?” and handed it over.

For the first time that night, my anxiety dissipated and I laughed.

“Thanks, but it’s not a stick. It’s called a spank paddle.”

“Ah, I see…” he grinned.

In the fluorescent lights of the cargo lift, I could finally see his boyish face clearly. He had a genuine smile with a dimple quickly flashing and eyes crinkling when he did. The type of smile your mothers warn you about.  Uh-oh, this boy is going to be trouble.

“I’m Nicolas by the way.”

His deep voice accentuated the Nico with his accent. If chocolate was a sound, that would be it. Smooth and easy like Sunday morning.

“Hi, I’m Selena…”

“Really? Don’t tell me your last name is Kyle..”

I bit my lower lip as I was trying to hold in my laugh when he smirked at me. There was something elusive about him that intrigued me. Was it his intoxicating cologne that seemed to envelope the space as he casually leaned right next to me? Or was it his green eyes that seemed to change hues in the flickering lights of the cargo lift as it took its slow descent? No no no, hold it together Selena, my inner voice whined at me. I felt another tingle though much lower than my belly this time slowly rising up. My cheeks felt flushed with the heat but so did my whole body. Yup, he’s definitely trouble. But then again, so was I. And I was starting to imagine the type of fun we could get up to tonight as I eyed his tight uniform pants and saw a faint outline of things to come….
